Most of the world uses Celsius for aquarium temperature, but many American resources — including some of the most detailed species care sheets and equipment specifications — use Fahrenheit. Misreading a temperature recommendation by even a few degrees can be dangerous for your fish. A Discus tank at 78°F (25.5°C) is at the low end of acceptable; at 78°C it would be soup.

What temperature should my aquarium be?
It depends on your fish. Most tropical community tanks are kept at 24–27°C (75–81°F). Goldfish and other coldwater fish prefer 18–22°C (64–72°F). Discus need warmer water at 28–30°C (82–86°F). Always research your specific species — even within 'tropical fish', requirements vary. The reference table above gives common ranges.
How accurate is this converter?
The converter uses the exact conversion formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Results are rounded to one decimal place, which is more than sufficient for aquarium purposes. Aquarium thermometers themselves typically have an accuracy of ±1°C, so the conversion precision far exceeds the measurement precision.
Why do some guides say 78°F and others say 26°C — are they the same?
Close, but not identical. 26°C = 78.8°F, while 78°F = 25.6°C. The difference (0.4°C) is usually negligible for fish health, but for sensitive species like Discus or shrimp, it can matter. When a guide specifies a precise temperature, convert exactly rather than rounding. This tool helps you do that accurately.
Should I use a glass thermometer or a digital one?
Both work well. Glass alcohol thermometers are cheap and reliable but can be hard to read precisely. Digital thermometers with a probe are more readable and often more accurate. Avoid the stick-on liquid crystal strips — they measure glass temperature, not water temperature, and can be off by several degrees. Whatever you use, calibrate it against a known-accurate reference occasionally.
What happens if my tank temperature fluctuates?
Temperature fluctuations stress fish and weaken their immune systems, making them susceptible to disease. Aim for stability within ±1°C of your target. Sudden drops of more than 2°C in a short period can cause temperature shock. If your tank temperature swings significantly, check your heater sizing (use the Heater Wattage Calculator) and consider insulating the tank or moving it away from drafts and windows.
Can I use this tool for other temperature conversions?
