The Heater Wattage Calculator helps you choose the right heater power for your aquarium based on tank volume and the temperature gap between your room and your target water temperature. An undersized heater will run constantly, wear out faster, and may fail to maintain temperature during cold snaps. An oversized heater is less efficient and can cause dangerous temperature swings if the thermostat sticks.
The calculator uses a watts-per-litre approach that scales with the temperature differential. For a small gap (1–3°C), you need roughly 0.5 W/L. For moderate gaps (5–8°C), about 1.0 W/L. For large gaps (above 12°C), up to 2.0 W/L. This reflects the reality that heating 200L of water by 10°C requires significantly more sustained power than maintaining it 2°C above room temperature.
The tool provides both a minimum and recommended wattage, rounded to the nearest 5W to match common heater sizes on the market. For gaps above 8°C, always choose the higher wattage. For tanks over 200L, consider using two heaters for redundancy — if one fails, the other can prevent catastrophic temperature loss.

- Enter room temperatureInput the typical ambient room temperature where your aquarium is located. Consider the coldest time of year — if your room drops to 16°C in winter, use that figure, not the summer average.
- Enter target temperatureSet the water temperature your fish require. Most tropical community tanks are kept at 24–27°C. Research your specific species — Discus need 28–30°C, while goldfish prefer 18–22°C.
- Read the suggested rangeThe primary result shows a wattage range (e.g. 50–75W). The minimum is the safe floor; the recommended is the ideal. When in doubt, choose the recommended value.
- Check the temperature gap and W/LThe tool displays the temperature differential and the watts-per-litre ratio being applied. This helps you understand the logic behind the recommendation and adjust if needed.
- Buy and installPurchase a heater that matches or slightly exceeds the recommended wattage. Position it near filter flow for even heat distribution, and use a separate thermometer to monitor actual water temperature — don't rely solely on the heater's built-in thermostat.

Can a heater be too powerful for my tank?
Yes, though it's less dangerous than an undersized heater. An oversized heater (e.g. 300W in a 20L tank) can heat the water too quickly if the thermostat malfunctions, potentially cooking your fish. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 2x the recommended wattage. A slightly oversized heater (10–20% above recommended) is fine and gives you a safety margin.
What if my room temperature fluctuates a lot?
Use the lowest expected room temperature in your calculation. A heater sized for 20°C room temp will struggle if your room drops to 15°C in winter. If you have significant seasonal variation (more than 5°C), consider a heater at the higher end of the suggested range, or add a second backup heater for winter.
Do I need a separate heater controller?
A separate thermostat controller is recommended for any tank where temperature stability is critical (e.g. shrimp breeding, Discus). It provides a backup: if the heater's built-in thermostat fails in the 'on' position, the external controller will cut power. For basic community tanks, the heater's built-in thermostat is usually sufficient.
Should I use one big heater or two smaller ones?
For tanks over 200L, two heaters are recommended for redundancy. If one fails, the other can maintain a survivable temperature until you notice. Place them at opposite ends of the tank for more even heating. For smaller tanks, a single correctly-sized heater is perfectly fine.
Where should I place my heater?
Position the heater near water flow — next to the filter output or a powerhead — so heated water circulates throughout the tank. Place it vertically near the bottom but not touching the substrate. Keep it fully submerged (unless using an external inline heater). Avoid placing it in a dead spot with no circulation, which can cause localised overheating.
My heater is running constantly — is it too small?
If your heater runs continuously and struggles to reach the target temperature, it's likely undersized for the temperature gap. Check the wattage against this calculator's recommendation. Also check for drafts, poor insulation, or a malfunctioning heater. A heater that never cycles off is wearing out faster and consuming more electricity — consider upgrading to a higher wattage.
